O poema haicai, na sua forma clássica, geralmente vem sem título e sem rima, e não mais do que um sinal de pontuação, provido de temática que contempla os elementos da natureza. Sendo composto de apenas dezessete sílabas (moras) estruturado em três versos, o poeta descreve um momento no presente, sem o uso de palavras no gerúndio, respeitando o recurso de não mais de um corte (kireji) entre a ideia exposta, ou seja, conservando a ligação justaposta dos versos, no sentido que dispensa possível pontuação à leitura. Conforme o passar dos tempos, algumas modificações foram ocorrendo na estrutura dos haicais. Critérios mantiveram-se e alterações aconteceram. Caso como a introdução das rimas, em que o primeiro verso com cinco sílabas (pentassílabos), rima com o terceiro verso, também de cinco sílabas, enquanto o segundo verso, de sete sílabas (heptassílabo e mantém a rima entre uma palavra anterior com a última palavra do mesmo verso. Bashô dedicava-se à prática da espiritualidade nos poemas que compunha, denominara de hokku a estrofe de três linhas que iniciava a renga e de haikai as demais estrofes.
A grande arte poética do haicai resulta da influência filosófica Zen Budista, representada pela brevidade, naturalidade, simplicidade e objetividade de linguagem. A intenção é a de causar uma sensação de contemplação daquilo que está em expressividade no poema ao ser lido, assim ele é idealizado em formato curto a fim de transmitir a essência de uma experiência. No zen-budismo, a excelência é tratada no estado do ser-fazer e não no dizer, com a prática da meditação pura – o esvaziar a mente; enquanto o koan (anedota) é voltado à iluminação espiritual, forma de diálogo entre o mestre e o discípulo que está em busca do aprendizado. O gênero literário, para os japoneses, tem representação voltada à diversão e passatempo graças ao caráter humorístico, contido. Na ilustração do haicai - renga, o artista produzia sua pintura com o próprio pincel que escreve os versos do poema, fazendo uso de cores e lots semelhantes, preservando assim, excelente harmonia.
